Female House Democrats wore sleeveless clothing today as part of a push to modernize the House dress code and defy misogynistic House Speaker Paul Ryan. Their defiance was done in style, by using one of the GOP’s favorite talking points against them. “Thank you to all my colleagues who joined me for #SleevelessFriday — because women have the right to bare arms!” tweeted Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.).
Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) said, “It’s 2017, and women vote, hold office, + choose their own style. Time to update the House rules to reflect the times!” Here here! These women clearly look professional and appropriately dressed. Paul Ryan’s dress code complaints are nonsense. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said in a tweet that the women were exercising “the right to ‘bare’ arms!”
This protest is the result of Paul Ryan trying to enforce a code that women can only dress exactly like men, by wearing only a suit and tie in both the Speaker’s lobby and House chamber. The controversy was sparked when female reporters were restricted from entering the Paul Ryan’s lobby because they wore sleeveless attire, despite the fact that it was business attire.
You can watch Paul Ryan start this controversy and sexism with his typical smug and rude way of speaking, in the clip below.
