You almost have to admire the lengths to which Fox News will go to defend the heinous behavior of Donald Trump. Every lie, misdirection, and obfuscation that spews forth from the mouth (or tiny fingers) of the person currently occupying the White House is treated with a genuflection before being spread to the masses by Fox’s apostles of antipathy.
Fox News has pushed the envelope of astonishment even further this weekend with the statements made by Britt Hume, the anchor of Fox News Sunday, while interviewing journalist Bob Woodward, one of the reporters who broke the Watergate story that brought the presidency of Richard Nixon to an ignominious end.
Discussing the current investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into the possible collusion by the Trump campaign with Russia in interfering with last year’s presidential election, Hume begins by parroting the administration’s talking points that are trying to undermine the public’s trust in Mueller’s integrity and credibility:
[Special counsel Robert Mueller has] “hired several lawyers who have made contributions to the Democratic Party, and would appear, at least on the surface, to be Democrats and perhaps Democratic partisans….
…It’s worth noting, I think, that this investigation has never been officially described as anything other than a counterintelligence investigation, which is to say that its purpose was to find out the extent of the Russians’ attempts to interfere in the election and influence the election. It was not therefore a criminal investigation, and has never been described as a criminal investigation. Do we all now believe it has now become a criminal investigation?”
Hume’s calculated obliviousness in regards to the widening consensus that Trump’s behavior towards James Comey constitutes clear obstruction of justice is quickly parried by Woodward’s confirmation that The Washington Post has reported that Mueller’s investigation has indeed morphed into a criminal inquiry.
After another panelist mentions that a grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia has been called to look into criminal allegations, Hume goes off the deep end:
“But what crime? Can anybody identify the crime? Collusion, while it would be obviously alarming and highly inappropriate for the Trump campaign, of which there is no evidence by the way, of colluding with the Russians. It’s not a crime. So are we talking about here the president’s firing of Comey being an obstruction of justice? And they got a grand jury on that? Is that was this is about?”
After spending most of the post-election period denying that there was ever any Russian interference in the electoral process, despite the numerous sources in both the fact-based media and the intelligence community clearly showing the contrary, Hume and Fox are now saying essentially: “Well even if the Russians did hack the elections, and Trump’s campaign colluded with them, what’s the big deal? It’s not like treason is a crime or anything.”
Hume and his Fox co-enablers wouldn’t know treason if it hit them in the head with a two by four. They are too busy spreading the fertilizer that passes for communications policy at the White House to recognize when our democracy is under threat and too self-interested to spring to the nation’s defense.
The saddest part of all of this is the fact that this drivel goes out to all the gullible Fox News viewers who take it as fact, spread it around to their friends and family, and sit in front of their TV’s as our democracy crumbles.
