First lady Melania Trump has questioned the mental health of Kathy Griffin after the comedian took part in a photo shoot in which she held up a bloody head resembling President Donald Trump. Griffin has faced a wave of criticism for the image and has since issued an apology.

“As a mother, wife, and a human being, that photo is very disturbing,” the first lady said in a statement released Wednesday. “When you consider some of the atrocities happening in the world today, a photo opportunity like this is simply wrong and makes you wonder about the mental health of the person who did it.”
The psychiatric community has a self-imposed rule that prevents them from speculating on the mental health of a public figure. The Goldwater Rule recently came into the spotlight over speculation concerning the president’s mental health.
The president earlier released a comment of his own on Griffin’s photo, stating on Twitter that it had caused concern for his youngest child, Barron.
“Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this,” he tweeted. “Sick!”
In an Instagram post, Griffin apologized for the photo, saying “I am sorry. I went too far. I was wrong.”
She added: “I’m a comic. I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it.”
Other members of the Trump family have also weighed in.
“The photo says it all, but this is what the left thinks is acceptable today,” Donald Trump Jr. wrote on Instagram.
In a series of tweets, the president’s eldest son went on to excoriate CNN for not immediately severing its ties with Griffin, who co-hosts the cable news network’s New Year’s Eve coverage. CNN said it was “evaluating” its coverage. Squatty Potty, a line of footstools for toilets, said it was pulling an ad campaign featuring Griffin.
