After Trump became president, more talk began about Sweden joining NATO. The next Swedish election will take place on or before September 9, 2018. What seems like a harmless act is a huge threat in Putin’s mind.
Putin interviewed with state news agency Itar-Tass and said:
“If Sweden joins NATO this will affect our relations in a negative way because we will consider that the infrastructure of the military bloc now approaches us from the Swedish side. We will interpret that as an additional threat for Russia and we will think about how to eliminate this threat.”
In 2016, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the same commitment as Putin, indicating a need for military action should Sweden join NATO.
Putin added, “This does not quite mean that we will become hysterical and we will aim our nuclear missiles at Sweden. But we will be obliged to undertake something because we see this as an additional threat to Russia.”
The Swedish are not comfortable with Trump in office. Sweden depends on an agreement with the U.S. for their defense. In their opinion, joining NATO gives them more security than depending on Trump.
A Swedish politician, Hans Wallmark, stated, “Now we have to rely on a person that is very tricky to read. The arguments for Swedish membership are therefore even higher today. It’s better that we seek the strength in co-operating with 28 countries rather just one nation.”
Putin is loving what he sees. He’s on a mission to destroy America’s relationship with Europe through using Trump, and he’s doing a great job. The Paris Agreement withdrawal was a big step.
