Trump’s Twitter behavior – which has always been concerning – has grown increasingly more erratic and unhinged recently.
This week’s crazed attacks on the hosts of Morning Joe was petty and creepy, bordering on outright obsession. The backlash was immediate, with both Democrats and Republicans slamming Trump for acting like a child and focusing on a pointless feud rather than his numerous responsibilities.
Now, Trump has taken to Twitter to defend his use of Twitter:
My use of social media is not Presidential – it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL. Make America Great Again!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) 01. јул 2017.
He’s right about the first part. There is nothing presidential about engaging in lowbrow cyberbullying. It’s completely undignified and it’s impossible to imagine any past presidents – even the worst of them – conducting themselves in such a fashion.
The second part is utterly inane. Trump is essentially recognizing how much he has degraded the office of the presidency. He’s claiming his behavior is the new version of “presidential,” which would imply the word now means the opposite of what it used to.
There are also shades of Nixon in the sentiment ala “When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.” Just because Trump is the president, does not make him presidential. Far more accurate to call him an ignorant bully who just happens to be president. He doesn’t deserve his office.
